Next-door to Martinique's capital - 5 km apart - Schœlcher is the gateway to the northern Caribbean.
A quality anchorage on the Caribbean Coast, the Case-Navire district was made a commune in March 1888 and named Schœlcher, in homage to the great French abolitionist.
At the time, Case-Navire made its living from fishing and boasted large sugar dwellings such as Fonds Rousseau, whose site is protected and listed on the Inventaire des Monuments Historiques.
Schœlcher is also a well-known Caribbean site that has been the subject of highly instructive excavations on the life of the Amerindians.
Today, Schœlcher is a young, lively and sporty conurbation, a seaside resort with the "Station Voile" label and its very dynamic Club Nautique (CNS). The commune is also classified as a "Station Voile Nautisme et Tourisme".
It boasts numerous tourist facilities: hotels, restaurants, the Casino Plaza Batelière or the Palais des Congrès Madiana. The commune is also home to the University of the West Indies.
