Sainte-Marie

Recognized as the cradle of Martinican traditions, Sainte Marie proudly bears and passes on this heritage. The town  holds a rich historical and cultural heritage to discover as you visit.

Let's start with the Musée du Rhum Saint James for a visit into the world of cane and rhum. Every December, the Saint James distillery organizes "le Fête du Rhum"

The Domaine de Fonds Saint-Jacques where Père Labat, known for his writings and work on rum, lived.

La Paille Caraïbe, an artisan center in Morne des Esses,  perpetuates  the basketwork techniques of the Caribbean Indians.

The Banana Museum to discover the secrets of the world's largest herb...

The Plantation Train invites you on a journey back in time.

The "Tombolo", a curiosity of nature, is a sandy spit linking a beautiful islet to the mainland. During the winter season (approximately from July to November), it is almost invisible; during Lent (approximately from January to June), it becomes accessible on foot.

Sainte-Marie is also the stronghold of the drumming tradition, the danse Bèlè and storytellers. To find out more, a visit to the Maison du Bèlè, in the Reculé district, is a must.

Don't miss:

  • Gastronomy Week in May, focusing on local produce
  • Walks in the managed forests "La Reculée" and "La Philippe"
  • Sainte-Marie is the only commune in Martinique in possession of the  National Label "Villes et Villages Fleuries", 3 flowers.
