Le Lorrain

Facing the Atlantic Ocean,  with its wild coastline lined with cliffs and black sand beaches, Le Lorrain is the largest commune on the North Atlantic coast (5,033 ha).

Several rivers cross it: the Grande Anse River, the Capot River to the west and the Le Lorrain River to the east. Between mornes and valleys, Le Lorrain boasts a landscape of lush vegetation, a real draw for lovers of nature.

With its fertile soils, Le Lorrain is an agricultural commune. Banana plantations occupy a large part of its territory. If the agricultural landscape along the road is anything to go by, the commune is truly the "kingdom of the banana".

Le Lorrain is also a high historical place. As excavations at the Vivé and Fonds Brûlé archaeological sites attest, several waves of settlement have succeeded one another in this region since pre-Columbian times. Numerous artefacts have been found in the commune. The Caribs did not abandon the region until 1658, fifteen years after the arrival of the French

Several traditional practices have been preserved in Le Lorrain. A must-see:

  • The Jouan family's artisanal cane mill in the Morne Bois district perpetuates the production of "battery syrup". Unique in Martinique, it is the last working cane mill. It dates back to 1797.
  • The Ragald family's Case à Manioc, an artisan cassava factory in the La Vallon district.
  • The Maison de la Poupée houses a collection of 150 Creole dolls.
