Inspiring experience
Prior to 1902, the Place Bertin was a vast esplanade where all the goods from Martinique's boats and farmers were stored in the open air. It wasn't until the 1923 reconstruction programme that a covered market was built in the middle of the square. Inspired by Baltard's central market halls in Paris, it incorporates all the codes of the metal architecture of the second half of the 19th century, with its vast, airy, light-filled volumes.
