Would you like to do something for the planet?

I imagine you've already done some research on what you absolutely mustn't miss in Martinique? Today I'm taking you off the coast of François and Robert to discover a must-see on our beautiful island... Les Fonds Blancs. These natural pools lost in the middle of the sea are famous for their white sand, crystal-clear shallow waters and unforgettable atmosphere. Let us guide you, you'll love it!

Fonds Blancs, what exactly are they?

Mysterious name, isn't it? Let me explain!

Do you know what shoals are at sea? In marine vocabulary, a shoal is an underwater peak covered by shallow water. They're generally due to the presence of reefs close to the surface or submerged sandbanks.

Martinique's Fonds Blancs are sandy shoals where the water is incredibly shallow, even far from the coast, where you can clearly see the immaculate white sand... And where you've got foot! You, the sun, a cocktail, postcard landscapes and waist-deep turquoise water. Can you believe it?

In Martinique, the most famous Fond Blanc is Baignoire de Joséphine, a mythical spot near Le François between Ilet Oscar and Ilet Thierry. Clear, warm waters. I just love it. A perfect setting for relaxing with a glass of rum (AOC!) in hand.

For the anecdote, it is said that the Fond Blanc de la Baignoire de Joséphine takes its name from Empress Joséphine, Marie Josèphe Rose de Tascher de La Pagerie, known as Joséphine de Beauharnais, Napoleon's first wife born in Les Trois-Ilets who, according to legend, loved to relax and go for a swim there.

Well, it's a story, because it's also said that La Baignoire takes its name from a dredger of the same name that used to come here to supply itself with sand. Either way, it's a Fond Blanc not to be missed!

What to do at Fonds Blancs?

Going on a boat or catamaran excursion to Fonds Blancs is much more than just swimming in clear water (although that's already incredible)! So, here's what's on the agenda:

  • Swimming and relaxing: jump off the boat and enjoy the warmth of the shallow waters and the Martinique sunshine.
  • Snorkeling: put on your best swimsuit and head underwater! You're bound to be impressed by the wealth of underwater flora and fauna around the islets.
  • Visit the islets: take the opportunity to discover natural gems such as îlet Chancel, home to Lesser Antillean iguanas, or îlet Madame, the perfect hiking spot and ideal for a picnic in the heart of nature.
  • Home-cooked meals: some tours offer a local lunch on one of the islets, with rum tasting or typical dishes such as a poulet boucané or some accras.
  • Fauna and flora observation: keep your eyes peeled! If you're lucky, you may catch a glimpse of dolphins at sea. During visits to the islets, you can fill your head with the unforgettable colors of the flowers and plants that grow there. As a little bonus, Ilet Chancel is home to the Lesser Antillean iguana!

How to get to Fonds Blancs?

To explore the Fonds Blancs, you need to hop aboard a boat or catamaran! Here are your options for optimal discovery:

Many service providers departing from the ports of Le François or Le Robert offer outings by motorboat or catamaran. These excursions are often led by passionate guides who will show you everything they love about Martinique. Personally, I loved it!
If you fancy a tailor-made experience, it's also possible to hire a boat with a skipper. There's something for everyone!
For the more sporty, I recommend kayaking or paddleboarding. Let's board!

The best times to visit the Fonds Blancs

Good news... Les Fonds Blancs is beautiful all year round (and so is the whole of Martinique, for that matter)  !

My advice though: to avoid the crowds, favor the low season (May to June, September to November). Mornings are also quieter than afternoons, and the light is ideal for taking a few (gorgeous) photos if you wish.

What to pack for a perfect day

It's time to pack your bag, the outing is coming up! Here's my starter pack of essentials to make the most of your outing:

  • Your swimsuit and towel (well, you guessed it, the essentials),
  • Sunglasses, a hat and biodegradable sun cream to protect your skin and the environment, because the sun is beating down hard on the water,
  • Shorts or a light dress because, once again, it's beating down hard on the water, and in the middle of the day you'll be quite hot,
  • A little sweater for the return trip at the end of the day, you'll see, you'll thank me!
  • Small water shoes if you plan to walk on the bottom or explore the islets,
  • Don't forget your camera or better still, a waterproof camera, these are magical moments!
