Postcard beaches
I've already told you about the incredible diversity of beaches in Martinique. As you'll see, they're one of Martinique's greatest assets. For from the fine white sand beaches of the south of the island to the volcanic black sand coves of the north of the island around Montagne Pelée, there's something for everyone!
The water is always crystal-clear and transparent, so whether you fancy wide open spaces, peace and quiet, lively little beachside restaurants or whole afternoons watching the multicolored fish, you're bound to find your ideal cove!
April is a dream time to discover Martinique's emblematic beaches. I'll give you my personal favorites:
- Les Salines in the commune of Sainte-Anne: an unmissable classic with its white sand and turquoise waters (to be avoided if you hate coconut palms and golden sand).
- Anse Dufour in Anses-d'Arlet: ideal for watching sea turtles in their natural habitat (smaller and intimate but magical).
- Anse Couleuvre in the commune of Le Prêcheur: a wild beach with black sand, perfect for a day away from it all (cliffs and rainforest... A real postcard).
Try your hand at water sports and aquatic activities!
My reco of must-try water sports and water activities to make the most of Martinique and its coasts in April:
- Scuba diving, of course: Martinique's seabeds are simply exceptionally rich and colorful. I have incredible memories of the Nahoon wreck or the area around Rocher du Diamant.
- Kayaking in the mangroves: a peaceful adventure in a unique and rather rare ecosystem.
- Paddleboarding or snorkeling: perfect for discovering the crystal-clear waters and their marine life.
Exploring nature abounding
Let's move on to the nature lovers (how I understand you)! Thanks to its wide variety of landforms and microclimates, the island offers an absolutely incredible biodiversity.
Come on, a quick summary to give you a first taste of what you can find here, but believe me, you won't be disappointed: tropical rainforests on the edge of Mont Pelée (you know, like in the documentaries that make you dream), mysterious mangroves, miles of hiking trails, tropical gardens with unforgettable flowers, rivers and waterfalls to leave you breathless, beaches straight out of American movies, endless fields of sugar cane or banana trees and majestic fruit trees... In short, in Martinique, you're not at the end of your surprises!
For this, April is for me a very good choice of period because, at this time, the tropical vegetation is in full bloom and offers truly magnificent scenery and landscapes. My small selection of must-sees:
- Go hiking on Montagne Pelée: set out to conquer Martinique's iconic volcano for a breathtaking view of the island. Personally, I loved it. What's more, you can choose between 3 more or less long and technical routes.
- Visit the Jardin de Balata: just one thing to say to convince you, this botanical garden is quite simply a feast for the eyes, with its tropical flowers and majestic palm trees. A great souvenir.
- A walk in the Montravail forest in Sainte-Luce: my small option for a walk accessible to all to admire the tropical trees and enjoy the soothing shade.
- A cooler swim in a river: my favorites, the Coeur Bouliki river in Saint Joseph near Saint Esprit, the Saut du Gendarme waterfall in Fonds Saint Denis, the Didier waterfalls near Fort-de-France.
Festivals and events not to be missed in April
Martinique is a festive island that literally lives to the rhythm of song, dance, music and culture, and for that April is not to be outdone! Some communes celebrate Easter with local traditions, for example.
I really advise you to find out when you arrive about any concerts, exhibitions or craft fairs that may take place during your stay. It's a great way to meet people and experience the real Martinique!
