Would you like to do something for the planet?

Let me guess, you're looking for the best time to come to Martinique? You've come to the right place! I've been lucky enough to discover the island at several different times of the year, and I've kept a few notes for myself about the highlights of each month.

In any case, don't worry, in Martinique... Summer is all year round! Let's start with April?

What's the weather like in Martinique in April?

An ideal climate to really enjoy the island

In April, the weather in Martinique is exceptional. The sun beats down and temperatures are warm but largely bearable. You'll be averaging 24°C at night and 30°C during the day. Just what you need, right?

April marks the near-end of Lent, the dry season in Martinique that begins in December and ends in late April or early May. In Martinique, the dry season means: little rain, only a few refreshing showers that beautify the tropical vegetation (you'll see, we don't say no!)

It's also the ideal season if you're rather sensitive to humidity. It rains much less and the air is much less heavy and humid than in summer (between mid-June and November), which is the low season in Martinique, or wintering.

Small weather point:

In April, for me the weather is just perfect. Temperatures average between 25 and 30 degrees during the day, with lows rarely below 23 degrees, even at night. It's mild, it's warm, it's vacation bliss!

As for rain, nothing to worry about: there may be a few passing showers, but they're short (often around ten minutes) and refreshing. Rainfall remains low compared with the rainy season. Basically, in April, it's sunshine every day, with the odd shower just to remind you that you're in the tropics. With a very reasonable average rainfall, it's really the perfect time to explore the island or just laze on a dream beach.

Sun cream in one hand and sunglasses in the other, let's set off for a stay under radiant skies!

If, like me, you love spending lots of time in the water, April is the perfect month for you: the sea temperature hovers around... 27°. No, you're not dreaming. So here's to swimming laps, scuba diving (the water in Martinique is incredibly transparent) or simply relaxing afternoons in the waves.

What to do in Martinique in April?

Postcard beaches

I've already told you about the incredible diversity of beaches in Martinique. As you'll see, they're one of Martinique's greatest assets. For from the fine white sand beaches of the south of the island to the volcanic black sand coves of the north of the island around Montagne Pelée, there's something for everyone!

The water is always crystal-clear and transparent, so whether you fancy wide open spaces, peace and quiet, lively little beachside restaurants or whole afternoons watching the multicolored fish, you're bound to find your ideal cove!

April is a dream time to discover Martinique's emblematic beaches. I'll give you my personal favorites:

  • Les Salines in the commune of Sainte-Anne: an unmissable classic with its white sand and turquoise waters (to be avoided if you hate coconut palms and golden sand).
  • Anse Dufour in Anses-d'Arlet: ideal for watching sea turtles in their natural habitat (smaller and intimate but magical).
  • Anse Couleuvre in the commune of Le Prêcheur: a wild beach with black sand, perfect for a day away from it all (cliffs and rainforest... A real postcard).

Try your hand at water sports and aquatic activities!

My reco of must-try water sports and water activities to make the most of Martinique and its coasts in April:

  • Scuba diving, of course: Martinique's seabeds are simply exceptionally rich and colorful. I have incredible memories of the Nahoon wreck or the area around Rocher du Diamant.
  • Kayaking in the mangroves: a peaceful adventure in a unique and rather rare ecosystem.
  • Paddleboarding or snorkeling: perfect for discovering the crystal-clear waters and their marine life.

Exploring nature abounding

Let's move on to the nature lovers (how I understand you)! Thanks to its wide variety of landforms and microclimates, the island offers an absolutely incredible biodiversity.

Come on, a quick summary to give you a first taste of what you can find here, but believe me, you won't be disappointed: tropical rainforests on the edge of Mont Pelée (you know, like in the documentaries that make you dream), mysterious mangroves, miles of hiking trails, tropical gardens with unforgettable flowers, rivers and waterfalls to leave you breathless, beaches straight out of American movies, endless fields of sugar cane or banana trees and majestic fruit trees... In short, in Martinique, you're not at the end of your surprises!

For this, April is for me a very good choice of period because, at this time, the tropical vegetation is in full bloom and offers truly magnificent scenery and landscapes. My small selection of must-sees:

  • Go hiking on Montagne Pelée: set out to conquer Martinique's iconic volcano for a breathtaking view of the island. Personally, I loved it. What's more, you can choose between 3 more or less long and technical routes.
  • Visit the Jardin de Balata: just one thing to say to convince you, this botanical garden is quite simply a feast for the eyes, with its tropical flowers and majestic palm trees. A great souvenir.
  • A walk in the Montravail forest in Sainte-Luce: my small option for a walk accessible to all to admire the tropical trees and enjoy the soothing shade.
  • A cooler swim in a river: my favorites, the Coeur Bouliki river in Saint Joseph near Saint Esprit, the Saut du Gendarme waterfall in Fonds Saint Denis, the Didier waterfalls near Fort-de-France.

Festivals and events not to be missed in April

Martinique is a festive island that literally lives to the rhythm of song, dance, music and culture, and for that April is not to be outdone! Some communes celebrate Easter with local traditions, for example.

I really advise you to find out when you arrive about any concerts, exhibitions or craft fairs that may take place during your stay. It's a great way to meet people and experience the real Martinique!

Fauna and flora in April

I don't know about you, but I'm a real nature lover. Oh dear, did I say that already? Martinique is full of natural treasures to admire in April:

  • Tropical birds: April is a good month to spot local species like the yellow-bellied sugarbird or the grivotte mockingbird.
  • Tropical flowers: flamboyants, hibiscus and bougainvillea bloom at this time, embellishing the landscape with their bright colors.
  • Marine turtles: April is also a good time to have the chance to observe turtles coming to lay their eggs on certain beaches, particularly in the south of the island.

Practical tips for your stay in April

My practical tips for making the most of your stay in Martinique in April:

  • Organize and book in advance: April is a popular period, not least because of the spring vacations. Whether for accommodation or activities, anticipate to guarantee the best options. On the other hand, it's the end of the busy tourist season, so it's sometimes possible to find lower prices on flights and stays. So start planning your trip well in advance to find the best deals. Flight prices fluctuate quite a bit, so keep an eye on comparators and alerts! When it comes to accommodation, you're spoilt for choice between comfortable hotels, apartment rentals or even magnificent villas if you're going as a group.
  • During your stay, don't miss out on the Creole specialities, the local rum (delicious) and why not take a boat trip to see some dolphins!
  • Protect yourself from the sun: the April sun can be intense. Make sure you wear a good hat, (environmentally-friendly) sun cream and moisturize regularly.
  • Prefer local transport: to explore the island, consider renting a car or using public transport for a more authentic experience.
