Basse Pointe

Birthplace of Aimé Césaire, Basse-Pointe, located in northern Martinique between Le Lorrain, Ajoupa Bouillon and Macouba, is dominated by the Montagne Pelée and slopes gently towards the roaring Atlantic Ocean.

A large banana and pineapple field can be admired all along the road leading to it.

A slightly low coastal point sloping gently down to the sea was all it took to give this parish its name in 1680 .

The region was colonized as early as 1658, and flourished with beautiful homes, two of the most famous of which are named Pécoul and Leyritz.

Agricultural breadbasket of Martinique thanks to its climate and fertile soil, it is home to the traditional crops destined for export: bananas, sugarcane and pineapples. Basse-Pointe was also a land of welcome for the many Indian immigrants in the 1850s.

It should also be noted that Basse- Pointe gave birth to two famous men: Hippolyte MORESTIN born in 1889, a great plastic surgeon and Aimé Césaire born in 1913 on the Eyma habitation near the Morne Balai district.
