Cultural Centers

Atrium
A recent addition to the skyline of Fort-de-France, the Atrium hosts temporary exhibitions of art and photographs in its foyer.
This state-of-the-art cultural center offers annual thematic programming that features classical music, world music, jazz, poetry, and dance performances. Contemporary art exhibits and animations are also featured.

CMAC - Centre Martiniquais d'Action Culturelle
The center has shows all year round, as well as movies, music, Rencontres Caribéenes de Theatre (Caribbean Theater Groups) in July, and a biennial festival in December
Past events include: the "Carrefour Mondial de la Guitare," a 2004 guitar festival acclaimed as "one of the world's most prestigious guitar events" featuring master classes by major artists, as well as concerts of classical jazz and pop guitar; in 2005, the "Rencontres Internationales de Jazz" attracted a line up of world class artists for a festival of jazz performances.

Sermac - Service Municipal d'Action Culturelle
The festival of Fort-de-France is held every year in July for 2 weeks. It features theater, music, shows at the Grand Carbet in Parc Floral and at the Theatre Municipal in Fort-de-France.

Night Life

There are a dozen good nightspots with a zouk or jazz beat in Fort-de-France and out of town around the island, also a number of piano bars and late night discos such as Le Zanzibar and Le Calebasse cafe both in Marin, l'Amphore Cotton Club in Anse Mitan, Le Zénith and the New Hippo in Fort-de-France, St. James Jazz Club in Jambette just outside town, Top 50 in Trinité, the Beverly Hills in Marin, Le Chalet in Rivière Salée, and the H Club in Ducos. Other night spots include le Cheyenne, Le West-Indies and Salsa Tech in Fort-de-France, Ti-Balcon on the outskirts and l'Endroit in Sainte-Anne. Check the local newspaper "France-Antilles" for musical events and venues. Many hotels have dancing, as well as shows by Les Grands Ballets de la Martinique, Les Balisiers or Pom' Cannelle, all fine troupes of talented dancers, singers and musicians.
Legal drinking age is 18.

Cotton Club
On the beach at Anse Mitan in the former Restaurant L'Amphore, this new nightspot is very popular. Cotton Club features live jazz and zouk, as well as traditional island music like beguine. The atmosphere is cozy and casual, and there is a little dance floor near the bar. Nice, friendly crowd, mostly locals.

Le Zénith
This new disco on Boulevard Allègre in Fort-de-France has live music and dancing. The Boulevard Allegre, actually the right bank of the Rivière Madame, has a long history as a "happy street" for late-night club crawlers.

Top 50
A new late-night disco in Trinité, Top 50 draws large crowds, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, who dance till to local rhythms till the wee hours.

"H" Club
Another new disco, located in Ducos, opens late and closes late, keeping dancers on their feet with great, upbeat local music.

Casinos

Martinique has one gambling casino located in Schoelcher - Casino de la Batelière Plazza.
This new casino is located on the main highway north of Fort-de-France, near the Batelière Hotel. An imposing architectural structure, it sports a gaming room for roulette and blackjack, as well as an adjoining arcade with 100 slot machines.

Entrance fee about 10 €.
Open nightly from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
American or French roulette and blackjack are the games played.
Proof of identity (e.g., valid passport or driver's license with photo) required.
Dress is casual; no tie or jacket needed.
There are slot machines in salons (no entry fee) next to casino rooms.
Legal gambling age: 18.
